Sound Healing Demystified

Sound Healing Demystified

What is Sound Healing?

Whether it’s Hayden you prefer, or Bob Marley, almost everyone has sensed the positive effect music has on their emotions, but sound does more than just change how you feel. It can also heal.

Whether it’s the sound of gentle rain falling, chimes, digeridoos, Tibetan singing bowls, crystal meditation bowls, drums, Indian flutes, tuning forks, monks chanting, or another form of vibration, there is ample scientific evidence that sound healing is an amazing modality to help cure many physical and emotional ailments.

Sound healing, also called music therapy, has been studied by the National Institutes of Health, Stanford, Harvard, Princeton, and a whole host of additional think-tanks and academic bodies.

Sound healing uses the concepts of vibration and energy to help:

  • Reduce pain
  • Unstick negative thought patterns
  • Reduce anxiety and depression
  • Slow the heart rate and inducing relaxation
  • Reduce oxygen consumption
  • Decrease blood pressure
  • Create calm and peacefulness
  • Changes brain frequencies (usually from beta to alpha and alpha to theta or deep delta)
  • Reduce ADHD
  • Improve neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s
  • Help patients recover from chemotherapy more quickly
  • Increase creativity
  • Reduces insomnia
  • Balances the nervous system, reducing sympathetic nervous system over-activity (the fight or flight response is calmed)
  • Alters energetic imbalances in the body (flow of qi)
  • Support cellular health

Sound healing works primarily by altering our brainwaves. This manipulation out of certain brainwave states, into a more relaxed state allows “coherence” which then translates to the rest of our bodies.

In sound healing, resonance principles are utilized to re-harmonize cells that have been imprinted with disruptive frequencies. Such troublesome imprints may have been a result of toxic substances, emotional traumas, pathogens, long-term exposure to noise pollution, or even alteration from pharmaceutical drugs.

With frequently applied sound therapies the body heals itself. You can observe this phenomenon even in plants. Studies have shown, for example, that plants grow faster and remain healthier when they are exposed to certain sound frequencies. Our cells are no different, and respond in kind.

Types of Sound Therapy

Sound therapies differ widely and can as simple as playing classical or uplifting music, to the utilization of sound combined with other healing modalities such as acupressure, crystals, Reiki, acupuncture, etc. Each of these modalities aim to change our emotional and brainwave states to usher in a healing response in the body.

Sonic Massage

Sound frequencies are simply the measurement of sound waves as they oscillate. These are indicated by Hertz, with 1 wave oscillation per second equaling 1 Hertz. If a sound wave oscillates at 16 Hz or below, we usually cannot hear them. Sonic massage utilizes a frequency of 16-20,000 Hz, and ultrasonic technologies use sound waves which oscillate above 20,000 Hz – again out of the human hearing range.

Sonic massage utilizes the intrasonic range – 16-20,000 Hz as it has been found to be the most beneficial to human tissue. When intrasonic sound reaches the cells, each molecule absorbs a small amount of the vibrational energy, and then passes it on to the next molecule. You can visualize this like a pebble being thrown into a lake, and watching the energy dissipates all the way to the lake’s edges in ripples on the water’s surface.

This wave of sound continues until all the energy has been absorbed by the cells. When a molecule is hit by a soundwave that is close to their own frequency (our cells make their own inaudible music), then they will strongly resonate. Since different tissues have different frequencies, different sound waves will affect them in different waves.

The resonance – essentially a cellular massage that causes retraction and expansion of the cells – that is created across a wide range of tissues increases lymphatic flow, spinal fluid movement, and helps to support cellular regeneration in cartilage, muscle tissue, and bone, resulting in elevated health.

Toning, Acutonics, Vibrational Medicine

All other forms of music therapy including toning, acutonics, and vibrational medicine work with the oscillating waves of sound to affect change in the physiology of the body.

In ancient hunter gatherer societies toning, drumming, crystal bowl playing, and other musical and tonal modalities were employed to speed healing, reduce pain, and alter emotional and spiritual states. Their principles were based on the very same cellular alteration that modern scientists are now documenting with contemporary sound therapies.

Frequency of 528 Hertz – The Sound of Love

When we look more deeply into sound healing, we also begin to uncover fractal, holographic patterns which are based in divine geometry. Different oscillations are indicative of certain underlying geometric patterns, some said to be part of the very fabric of creation.

Dr. Leonard Horowitz, a pioneer in modern sound healing states that 528 Hertz is a frequency that is central to the “musical mathematical matrix of creation.” More than any sound previously discovered, the “LOVE frequency” as it is called, resonates at the heart of everything. When we bathe our cells in this harmonic frequency, we are essentially realigning our cells with the Universal principle. This frequency is even said to repair DNA.

You can watch a preview of the documentary Song of the New Earth which incorporates the mysticism of music in ancient cultures with the modern scientific studies which are proving that sound does indeed heal, and heal deeply.
